Blogging is fun.
When I started my blog, it was about having fun. It still is. I would not carry on blogging, taking pictures engaging in the community if I did not enjoy doing what I am doing. In the last few weeks, my feelings have changed slightly, I still enjoy it, but I have to make sure that everyone else is enjoying my blog also. Rather than thinking, I love this post or I love this design, there's a little thought in my head asking if everyone else will love it too. It's more away from what I want on my blog, to what people reading would rather want. The posts that I love to write, I don't write as much because they the lowest page views. Somewhere along the lines I've stopped blogging for me.
When did there become so many dos and don'ts?
I only realised this during twitter chats. It's a given that people will say their preferences of blogs, what they like to read and what is appealing them to them, but I feel like it's further than personal preferences. It seems like there is a unwritten rule of blogging.
So don't worry if..
1. You don't like clean and simple blog designs
I'm a lover of bright colours and floral patterns, but I felt that I had to calm my layout down so that people would read it. I never judge a blog by its design, I'm not a pro at designs and neither are a lot of people. If I love your posts, the design isn't an issue for me (and probably lots of other people too) in the slightest. It doesn't matter.
2. You don't post in a couple of weeks.
I'm sure many of us, myself included have gone a while without posting. It is probably longer than we would have liked, but sometimes blogging isn't the priority. I took a break during my third year at university when I was studying for final exams, writing essays and finishing my dissertation and I don't regret it at all. Sometimes life gets in the way and that's fine. It doesn't matter.
3. White backgrounds aren't for you.
A sleek white background for photos is not the be-all and end-all for product reviews. People will read your blog if they like it no matter what your photo background is. I've worried about this too much, when the fact is, it really doesn't matter.
4. You don't have the latest beauty products.
If you want to, fair enough, if you feel you have to, you don't, there's plenty of things you can blog about besides this. It doesn't matter.
5. Your blog is not like everyone elses.
It doesn't matter.
So what now?
I'm not saying it wrong to please your readers, I completely understand why it's important to please them as you want to gain a readership, but I think it's important to remember also why you started blogging and when everything you did was for you. Basically, I just wanted to write this post as a reminder for myself that there are no rules of blogging even though there may seem to be. Don't put pressure on yourself, just have fun and blog for you.
What are your thoughts on this topic? Do you think there are unwritten rules?
